Uganda to host African Volleyball championship on February 26

The tournaments, which promise to thrill the fans in a non-stop double-gender event, will be held at Lugogo Indoor Stadium and Ok'la Sports Arena.

The African Volleyball Confederation (CAVB) Zone V Championship has confirmed February 26 to March 4, 2025, as the new dates after the host country changed the tournament dates.

The tournaments, which promise to thrill the fans in a non-stop double-gender event, will be held at Lugogo Indoor Stadium and Ok'la Sports Arena.

"Lugogo Indoor Stadium and Ok'la Sports Arena are earmarked for the event. Fans will be treated to a non-stop double-gender event which will run from 10 am until midnight," CAVB Zone V said on X.

Originally scheduled for February 16 to 22, the event will now be held during the new period to ensure a better tournament experience. The CAVB Zone V management announced the revised dates on January 11 through their social media platform, X. Kenya will be represented by five teams at the competition.

"Dear Members. We have received a request from our host, Uganda, to adjust the dates of the Zone V Club Championship and, in a bid to host the best competition, the rest of the deliverables remain the same. We regret the inconveniences this may cause," as seen on the CAVB Zone V X page.

Uganda Volleyball Federation officially welcomed the CAVB Zone V Club Championship in Kampala during a press conference on Monday.

"Earlier on, President Nasiwu Sadik held a press conference to officially welcome the CAVB Zone V Club Championship in Kampala."

The president noted that, as a zone, they aim to provide a cost-friendly event for the clubs and give maximum exposure to the athletes in the region. "As a zone, our target is to host a cost-friendly event for the clubs in the region, and give maximum exposure for our athletes."

The chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Joseph Odong, who was also present, relayed gratitude to the government of Uganda for allowing them to host the competition in the region, stating, "I want to thank the Government of Uganda through NCS for giving us the opportunity to host, we are ready to give the fans a memorable experience during the six-day event."

A total of 20 teams have confirmed their participation in the event, with Kenya expected to field three women's clubs and two men's clubs at the CAVB Zone V Championships. The Kenyan delegation features KCB, defending champions Kenya Pipeline, both the men's and women's teams from Kenya Prisons, and the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) men's team.

"20 teams have already confirmed participation in the event set for Uganda's capital, Kampala, from February 26 until March 4, 2025, at the Lugogo Indoor Stadium."

This is the first major volleyball championship to be held in Kampala after Uganda's Sadik Nasiwu, also President of the Uganda Volleyball Federation, took over the leadership in November 2024. Innocent Komakech, a referee delegate, also chipped in, noting that, for this event, they intend to incorporate national referees to officiate.

"For every regional event, there is always a legacy programme; this time, we intend to involve our national referees in this competition as scorers and court managers, as officiation is limited to International Referees," said Innocent Komakech, Referee Delegate.
